George Flitcroft-Smith 0 Eric Faccer 1
Eric maintained the form that he had shown in the 7 rounds played to date (barring the blip against Tony in round 7!) to win the Flood Cup for 2003. The play-off match saw Eric victorious in a game that hinged on two moves. At move 7 Eric had played Bg4 when a safer move would have held the ship safely together. George capitalised with the reply of Qb3 creating a danger on f7 that Eric tried to negate with Qd7. At this point George had intended to move Bxf7+ at move 9, followed by Qxb7 with the rook and knight in peril. Inexplicably George spent 25 minutes on move 9 pondering whether his combination was sound…he said his mind seized up… and then moved Ng5 ‘just to make sure’. Unfortunately for George he didn’t see the power of Erics’ 9th move reply Bh5 which held the fortress together. A pawn down and nothing to show for it, George’s attack fizzled and with it his chance of achieving victory.

Flood Cup 2003 results in detail
Interclub – The Gap v Northside
30 May 2003
Northside Chess Club visited The Gap reviving days of old when these contests were a regular occurrence. Richard Hixon led Northside to a 4-2 victory on the night. The Gap fielded a team comprising the ‘most willing’, a policy that left strong players such as Debbie Jenkins, Stuart Wilson and Mike Talbot on the sidelines. Several of the games were close, but all victories were clearcut in the end with no time scrambles affecting the results. One hour time controls were used in all games. Once the games were over several friendly games were played between Gap and Northside players. The Gap has agreed to visit Northside on a Wednesday night at Nundah some time in July.
