The crucial game of the night was won by George when he got Ray into all sort of trouble forcing a resignation at move 21. This means that there will be a single game play-off for first place between George and Eric. The play-off match will occur next week with George playing white, as he played with black in their fourth round game. The winner of the game will win the Flood Cup, a draw will result in the trophy being shared for 2003.
Harvey regaled the club with memories of the time he and George were involved in a play-off for the Flood Cup way back in 1989. With both players required to go two-up in the play-off to win the trophy (as in a tennis set) the title for still unsettled after 4 games. As this marathon was eating into the 1990 calendar it was decided to call it quits and share the trophy.
In other games Gabby won on forfeit when Debbie’s other chess commitments meant she couldn’t make it (good luck at the Gold Coast!). Andrew overcame a customary bad start to beat Stuart and complete his tenth consective top 5 finish in the Flood Cup. Peter managed to get the exchange up and had two rooks to a rook and a bishop, but accepted a draw offer from John. James played ‘one-day’ style against Brian but found the over rate too hard to keep up with and capitulated to Brian within half an hour.
It should be noted that with all of the games now played for the seven rounds that regardless of next week’s game Eric will be the Handicap Trophy winner.

Quote of the night:
“I feel like Annika Sorenstam”
- James Hiller, presumably referring to the kefuffle surrounding her playing in a men’s PGA event. Greeted by a chorus of “don’t we all” from other members…
