Report – 2 June 2006

Twenty players represented their respective teams in the interclub match (10 for The Gap; 10 for Bullwinkle).

The Gap actually had 18 players show up on the night, all of whom could have represented The Gap. Special thanks to those who came but did not get to play against Bullwinkle tonight: Cameron De Vere, John Curran, Mark Taylor, Stuart Wilson, Tim Johnson, Greg Colwell and the Hiller brothers. Unfortunately not everyone could play tonight, but there will be further interclub matches coming up in the near future, including the annual pilgrimage to Samford on a cold Wednesday evening in July.

Jacob Edwards was also present as non-playing captain of the Team Bullwinkle.

Interclub v Bullwinkle Chess Club

The Gap was fighting to regain some respect after the shellacking received on 31 March 2006 in the last encounter between these teams. However The Gap was up against it with their top seed Brian Thomas a disappointing no-show and the knowledge that this was first against last from last December’s Qld Clubs Teams Championship. Bullwinkle has sportingly agreed not to field over 1800 rated players which meant that they were short of “two or three” 1800+ players who might otherwise have occupied the top boards.

The boards were scattered around in the room in anarchic fashion and the games finished likewise. Mick won the first game to finish, followed soon after by Marty who went the pawn and exchange up and won comfortably. Two-nil to The Gap!

Then came a few reverses with Gordon Powell succumbing, and Debbie Jenkins and Brian Willcock following. Regina said she had considered offering Brian a draw at one stage but battled on to victory. Debbie forgot a move in an opening she hadn't played in a while, went a piece down early, and never recovered. The Gap’s other loss occurred when Ray lost an intense hard fought struggle with Craig Stewart.

Phil and Tony won their top board games, while Andrew was fortunate to escape with a draw. Tony also said that he needed an ounce of luck to escape with victory in his game. Phil had some passed pawns down the centre that piloted him to victory.

With all other games finished and the score standing at 4.5-4.5, interest centred on Board 7 which would decide the contest. Garvin had earlier been two pawns up, but now he was only one pawn up and the exchange down (rook v bishop). With accurate play Nina Kissel would have won the endgame, however after all other material was exchanged her final pawn was on the a-file and Garvin’s king made it to a8 forcing the draw.

The verdict from most participants (and Jacob also) was that The Gap achieved an impressive result on the night in an even contest. We thank our visitors for once again covering the miles to make the journey to come and play at our premises. The Gap CC looks forward to our next interclub encounter with Bullwinkle and hope it is as intensely fought as tonight’s encounter.

One Hour / Maiden tournament 2006 in detail

Quote of the night

“A draw is as good as a win for us” – Phil commenting on The Gap’s improved overall showing compared with the March 31 effort.

1. “I was very chivalrous”

2. “I was victory challenged”

3. “I was sulking because she refused to offer a draw”

- the progressive answers from Brian when enquired of the result in his game against Regina

“Will our participation in the One Hour enhance the tournament?” – Peter asking what he thought was a serious question in relation to the Hillers’ last minute entry to the Hour

“Is this a verbal contract?” – Peter asking another question upon being told of his responsibilities with entering the tournament and the consequences of making an unauthorised withdrawal (ie referred for CAQ sanction)
