Report – 31 March 2006

Sixteen players played in the interclub match (8 for The Gap; 8 for Bullwinkle). Also Marty and Tony slogged it out in the Flood Cup. Andrew, Stuart, John and Brian Willcock also showed up, along with Jacob Edwards (Bullwinkle team captain). So, 23 chess players was a good attendance for one night at The Gap!

Interclub v Bullwinkle Chess Club

Phillip Kirkman was observed in his flashy grey sportscar speeding towards the city down Waterworks Road. He failed to turn right into The Gap State High School and at this point The Gap CC’s chances of defeating Bullwinkle were over.

Before tonight’s action there were four players undefeated in the Flood Cup. All were unavailable for the interclub match, and so The Gap requested that this interclub match be deferred. However Bullwinkle CC made a special request for the game to proceed and The Gap, an exceptionally generous club, acceded to this request. Team captains Jacob Edwards (Bullwinkle) and Andrew Robinson (The Gap) did not play. As originally agreed, Bullwinkle fielded an under 1800 team, while The Gap by dint of circumstance ended up fielding a 1400 and under team.

Despite the rating differentials, most of the games were close. Perhaps the ratings did not matter so much as some of the Bullwinkle players were a bit rusty. A few of them only play infrequently, mainly in Bullwinkle interclub matches (perhaps three or four a year) due to their other commitments. Bullwinkle CC does not meet regularly like a standard chess club, but manages to stay together as it is a loose amalgam of friends, with Jacob Edwards the driving force. The club has not been so active in recent years as it was during the late 1990s has not had an intraclub championship in the past two years.

Bullwinkle captain presented an award to Craig Stewart before the chess commenced tonight, to honour Craig’s achievement of representing Bullwinkle 10 times in interclub matches, and 20 times in rapid matches (Qld Team Club Ch’ship). Maybe we at The Gap should do more of this?

The Gap managed two draws to avoid the ignominy of a whitewash, however there were some good points to come out of most of the games. Debbie and Ray’s games were probably the most one sided with Ray’s game finishing first after he lost to the French Defence exchange variation. Mick and Cameron both garnered draws and Cameron felt that he could have pressed for victory if he had avoided some inaccuracies in the closing stages.

Mark’s game was last to finish and he might have done better in a close game but for time pressure induced mistakes at the end. Tim played what he considered one of his best games. In the middle game he was applying a lot of pressure on his opponent, but a single move unwound his position and he fell to counter-attack. Shane was doing well against a double-dealing traitorous Olympian and only lost by a single tempo in a close endgame. Shane enquired whether The Gap would still get a point. When quizzed on why she was playing for Bullwinkle rather than The Gap, Kieran replied with an enigmatic Mona Lisa smile…

A rematch may occur in the first Friday in June. (Revenge! Revenge!)

Flood Cup

Round 3 result:

Marty Chadwick 0 Tony Howes 1

Marty was doing quite well into the middle game after Tony had overlooked the loss of his b7 pawn to a “sneak attack”. With the zombie chamber at his back it looked like Marty’s astonishing run of success would continue. However the pawn capture was at a positional cost that allowed Tony a lot of tempo while Marty attempted to reshuffle his defence. Tony was pressing down the kingside and a hasty pawn move unravelled what defence was left in front of the white king. Marty looked on glumly while Tony launching a huge counter-attack that won the game and took him to equal top in the Flood Cup standings after three rounds.

Quote of the night

“I reckon it’s a p*n!s extension to frighten us” – an anonymous female member of The Gap’s line-up tonight, commenting on an imposing Bullwinkle trophy that appeared out of nowhere

“I reckon he’ll give me a good time” – Tim (who wished he said match instead of time) upon hearing that he is likely to be facing John Curran in Round 4 of the Flood Cup

“Are you familiar with the French Defence?” – Ben McPhee to Ray while they were going through post-match analysis

“People call me the TOURNAMENT NAZI, but I think you’re even more extreme than me” – Garvin to Debbie
