Report –
Lightning Tournament
A small field
of five players appeared for the lightning tournament which meant the while
tournament was able to be played in a single night.
The club
welcomed Graham Redding who played with a DGT for the first time and showed
improvement through the evening, together with a dose of good fortune in his
games with Mark Pendrith.
Tony Morris
claimed his first lightning championship at the club remaining undefeated on
the night.
However the
tournament remained close to near the end, with the vital game in the second
last round between Tony and Andrew decisive.
Tony had a
small advantage, which became quite large as Andrew tried to play for a win on
time, but conceded when his own flag fell with Tony having 4 seconds remaining.
Andrew had
similarly close games with Martin, both of which could have gone either way.
Martin played
well to hold Tony to a draw (repetition with queens on the board) in their
first game, but blundered a piece and resigned in the second.
Graham scored
his first win in tournament play when Mark ran out of time while in a winning
position.
Then in the
second game Mark was about to deliver checkmate but touched the wrong rook
resulting in stalemate.
