First, a short history lesson…..
Tonight marked 47 years to the day since The Gap Chess
Club first met on a club night, on
Back then the club met in the hall of St. Mark’s
Church on
Prior to 1970, the club had been active for at least a
year or two in the Singer Cup, the Brisbane district’s main interclub competition
at the time, but did not have regular club nights until August 1970.
The club’s stay at St. Marks was short-lived with its
meeting point moved to the library of
By 1973 the club was meeting on Friday nights, and in 1980
the club moved to The Gap State High School. These two constants of the club
have continued to do to this day.
Tonight’s four games were all well fought out,
although there were no big surprises in the outcomes.
The first game to finish saw Andrew come up against an
opponent keen to exchange down the pieces.
Perhaps Martin was a little too keen as he struggled
after Move 21 when an exchange of rooks weakened his position: Link to the

Tony Morris played well to dominate most of his game against Joshua,
setting up a blistering attack by the time the middle game was reached: Link to the game
Brian struggled after going down a piece to Tony who
ended up with a comfortable win.
Mark won his first game of the tournament, taking
advantage of his opponent’s passive play in a game clogged with pawns.
