The Flood Cup commenced with 9 of the 11 entrants having competed in last year’s edition of the Flood Cup.

New entries for this year came from Rex Scarf and Evgeny Voloshko, for their first Flood Cup campaigns

Four games were played tonight, all wins to black.

The biggest upset of the night saw the joint reigning Flood Cup champion Tony Howes succumb to Joseph Curtain.

Tony experimented with a less familiar opening and never recovered after Joe played solidly to tie up Tony’s pieces leading to a resignation in the middle game.

Evgeny Voloshko also showed he will be a force in this tournament overcoming a formidable opponent in the first round.

Brian was getting his pieces tied up in the middle game after the opening left a pawn blockade across the middle 4 files of the board.

He then overlooked the result of an exchange which left him a piece down after 25 moves and resigning at Move 32.

Martin was on top for most of his game, but made a few errors towards the end which Rex failed to exploit, and remained comfortably in front until the end.
