Report –
Lightning Tournament
Tonight’s
concluding evening to this tournament witnessed many upsets, very different
from last Friday when there were few.
Of the leading
players from last week, all except Andrew lost three games or more tonight, and
this was the determining factor in deciding the outcome of the tournament.
Martin only
lost once last week, but lost his first two games tonight.
After further
losses in Rounds 6 and 7, it was a good result to hang on to third place with
wins in the final two rounds.
In Round Two,
Joshua lost to Brian when the latter claimed a win on an illegal move by his
opponent.
Further losses
his father Tony and Cameron in the next two rounds put paid to his prospects,
and even a win against Andrew in Round 6 was not enough.
Cameron had an
odd night, winning his first four games to have an outside chance of winning
the tournament.
However he lost
in Round 7 against Andrew in a game he dominated until near the end, blundering
in time trouble.
This started
the rot, and Cameron following his four straight wins with four straight losses
to finish in fourth place.
Tony Morris laboured having to play left-handed, a greater liability in
this short form of the game where hand-eye coordination is a greater factor.
Despite this,
Tony scored 5 wins and losses to the equal second best result on the night, and
achieve fourth placing overall.
Adam Morris won
in Round Four against Tony Howes, probably the
biggest upset result in this tournament.
Brian Willcock had a greatly improved showing, winning four of
his eight games, all of them on merit!
Andrew’s 7 wins
from 8 games over the board tonight were not as convincing as the scorecard might
suggest:
