Lightning Tournament
The first night
of tournament play at the club this year drew a field of 11 players.
The results
would indicate a definite hierarchy had formed with no players below the top
two sharing the same points tally.
However a lot
of the games were much closer, and with the unpredictable nature of blitz chess
could easily have ended with a different result.
Martin shone
tonight, only conceding points in a single game, and must be a strong contender
if he can replicate this form next Friday.
The other two
players at the top of the table are Andrew and Joshua. They played out a tense
draw, agreed with an even game and both players under
45 seconds.
Tony Morris
failed to replicate last year’s performance in this tournament when he came
third, but he was labouring under a handicap, playing one-handed due to a
recent medical procedure.
Max Crocker
came for his first night at the club. He has played a lot of online chess, but
rarely over the board.
His results
tonight did not reflect his play, and in games against two of the leaders
(Andrew and Joshua) he miss opportunities to win their
queens (through a discovered check) and gain a match-winning advantage.
