Just two sets of games were played tonight to complete the season’s fixtures at the club. The final night for the season will be next Friday’s AGM.

The match-up between Joshua and Andrew was much anticipated as it would decide the fate of the tournament.

The first game was hard fought with Joshua playing white on the ascendancy throughout. He forced his opponent to concede the exchange to avoid mate.

Then Andrew attempted to gain a second pawn advantage but only succeeded in exchanging rooks, after which Joshua’s lone rook and two pawns counted for more than Andrew’s bishop and three pawns.

Game two saw Andrew with a huge positional disadvantage after trying a few unorthodox moves in the opening.

Joshua could have perhaps have exploited these further, but Andrew was fortunate to be allowed the opportunity to exchange pieces.

Needing a draw to pip Tony Morris in this tournament for third place and thereby win the Best All-Rounder Trophy, Andrew offered a draw a couple of time, rejected by his opponent.

The remaining pieces were exchanged leaving Joshua’s king slightly better placed, but not enough to stop both sides gaining a queen a move apart with a draw the result.

The win and draw for Joshua tonight saw the following tournaments decided:

§         Allegro Tournament: First Joshua Morris; Second Cameron De Vere; Third Andrew Robinson

§         Best All-Rounder Trophy: First Andrew Robinson; Second Tony Morris; Third Joshua Morris

§         Joe Tarnawski Trophy (for combined Lightning and Allegro): First Joshua Morris; Second Tony Morris; Third Andrew Robinson

To wrap up the tournament, sets of games not played involving John and Nick (three sets each) were awarded to their opponents 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

Thomas Rynne’s games did not count to the final table as he completed less than half of his fixtures.
