Two games were pivotal in deciding the outcome of this year’s Flood Cup, with three players capable of achieving five points and forcing a play-off with Tony Howes.
Both Andrew and Joshua were on four points going into the game, so with a draw useless to both players, an asymmetric attacking game ensued.
Joshua sacrificed a pawn for a kingside attack that sought a bishop-queen checkmate in the corner.
Andrew moved to avoid this and found his queen attacked by a rook protected by a bishop.
After the queen had been exchanged for rook and bishop, Andrew had neutralised Joshua other bishop and rook, and mate followed in the corner.
Martin had much the better of a draw with Tony Morris, who was never really a chance of gaining the win he needed to join the play-off series.
Ray Adams and Cameron De Vere had comfortable victories while John Ryland completed an impressive finish to the tournament securing a second consecutive win.
