Because Gary Sands will be unavailable for several weeks after tonight, the Round 7 draw was brought forward to give him a chance to win the Flood Cup over the board.
After just six moves, Gary Sands was a piece up for nothing after a diabolical (and uncharacteristic) mistake by Tony in the opening.
Play continued on strategically for Tony after this, trying to create a threat while avoiding material exchange.
Then from about Move 22 Gary missed a few chances to consolidate and exchange material.
The game deteriorated for Gary who succumbed to time pressure and actually lost on time, a rare occurrence in the Flood Cup. The game finished at 11:30pm, and a lucky escape it was for Tony.
Daniel Sheldon played Brian in what was effectively a play-off for the Handicap Trophy if Gary should lose.
Towards the endgame Brian had a couple of extra pawns for a bishop, but Daniel played impressively with an accurate endgame to avoid Brian’s traps and force the win.
It was only after Gary Sands’ loss late into the night when Daniel could be confirmed as the Handicap Trophy winner for this year.
In other games from Round Six, Joe Curtain played well to ground down Martin Laizans who avoided any blunders, but lost to the better player on the night.
Daniel Clancy appeared to be coasting to victory in a rook endgame with several pawns advantage, but John’s greater experience told in the final result.
