On a very busy night, a full schedule of games was played tonight, with just one game postponed to next Friday.
None of the games finished before 9:20pm, with the Swiss system resulting in closer matches as the rounds progress. The games listed below are in order they finished.
The first game to finish saw Martin Laizans avoiding a “Hiller one-two”, with a straightforward win over James, after his surprise defeat to Peter last Friday.
Of last Friday’s game, Martin reported of his astonishment when he arrived today: “Peter played like a 2000 rated player last Friday. I didn’t make any blunders. Every move I made, he had the perfect move in response. He was playing at 2000 standard, no doubt about that”.
Daniel Sheldon notched his first win over the board, with a good win against Adam Morris in a mostly even game.
Peter continued his winning run against John, although with a good dose of fortune. John was a piece up, but a failure on his part to detect a desperate threat from his opponent (a single move of his knight could have blocked the threat) allowed Peter a pawn promotion with mate soon to follow.
After this, almost another hour passed before four games finished within 20 minutes between 10:20pm and 10:40pm.
Two new players joined the tournament at this round, and were paired to play each other. The game was of a high standard with Peter Black prevailing over Daniel Clancy.
They stayed after and analysed their game, and both should provide stern challenges to other Flood Cup players in the final two rounds.
Ray Adams ground down Brian Willcock who miscalculated a combination, to enable Ray move to three points in the table.
The Board One clash resulted in Tony Morris inflicting Erick McPherson’s first defeat, an important result in the context of the tournament with Tony overtaking Erick into first position.
Andrew Robinson and Gary Sands played a see-sawing game. Andrew obtained a piece advantage, but crucially conceded the exchange and a huge positional advantage to his opponent.
With a lot of last ditch defending, Andrew managed to reached a more favourable position, only to concede a knight to a queen fork with an overly hasty move.
After this black, now the exchange down, manufactured a threat that forced a repetition and Gary offered a draw which was readily accepted.
The final game did not conclude until 12:15am, leading to renewed discussion around what time controls are suitable for the Flood Cup, with 70 minutes plus 30 seconds mooted as a possible alternative to the current time controls of 80 minutes plus 60 seconds. Tony Howes had a two pawn advantage in a rook endgame, which he was a able to nurse to victory with careful accurate play.
