Lightning Tournament
The tournament calendar commenced tonight with the club Lightning Tournament (5 minutes per player, no increments).
A respectable entry of 12 players played in the first round, with John Ryland taking the bye in this round and joining the tournament in Round Two to make 13 entries.
The club welcomed three new players with Theodora Brewster plus juniors Daniel Sheldon and Jacques Van Rensberg playing in their first tournament at the club.
In addition three faces we had not seen in five years returned: Nathan Shaw (who won this tournament in 2010); Gary Sands (last appeared 2011 Flood Cup) and Rob Joyce (last appeared 2010 Allegro).
With 13 rounds to get through on a humid night, it was quite a challenge for the players.
It was also a challenge for the Director of Play Shane Mather who managed the tournament well ensuring the rounds were proceeded with promptly and 12 of the 13 rounds were completed on the night.
The tournament favourite Andrew Mather surprisingly lost to Tony Morris in the first round, but then managed to win all of his remaining games despite a few close scares.
Joshua Morris continued his steady improvement with a strong performance only losing to Andrew Mather and Gary Sands. Gary had a stellar night, losing only twice to achieve a result that belies his rating.
Nathan and Rob each showed signs of rustiness with their efforts, but are likely to improve their performance in the second week of play.
