Today was a very successful day for the Chess Association of Queensland and also for The Gap Chess Club.

The Gap also congratulates the Gold Coast Chess Club for being the first club to win this tournament in three consecutive years.

The previous high total of teams entering was smashed with 13 teams easily surpassing the previous record of 9 teams which entered last year's edition. Due to this great showing of support from the local chess community, there was a late decision to amend the time controls from 15 minutes flat to 15 minutes plus 3 second increments. Last year the event was run as a round-robin, but with too many teams a Swiss draw (7 rounds) made more sense, probably made life easier for the arbiter as well. The arbiter was Andrew Fitzpatrick who did a fine job and ensured the tournament ran smoothly after getting off to a slightly late start.

This tournament was also a watershed for The Gap Chess Club. For the first time in the history of this tournament, The Gap finished in the top half of the final standings. And another first was The Gap winning more games than it lost. This was achieved in no small part due to the recruitment of Moulthun Ly to our top board, and credit for this goes to the team coach Shane Mather who was also instrumental in ensuring The Gap fielded a team again this year. The club thanks Moulthun for playing for The Gap and for contributing his seemingly effortless performances to enhance our club's prospects. Indeed, Moulthun won all of his games except the game against Gene Nakauchi in which Moulthun had a slight advantage but had to settle for a draw when Gene knocked off his final pawn.

Having Moulthun on Board One allowed the rest of our team to play down a board, and as the table below shows, most players ended up with opponents whose average rating closely matched their own. Despite this advantage over previous years, The Gap's other five players had mixed results.

Andrew Mather was disappointed to lose to Oliver McCarthy in the second round, but produced two strong performances to win against veteran Alain Pardoen of Park Road, and then achieve a draw with 2261 rated Dusan Stojic.

Cameron De Vere had a bad day all round, playing at time controls with which he was never comfortable. However, his participation was on Board Three due to his relatively high 1691 classical ACF rating, and this at least allowed the club's next three players to play down a board.

Andrew Robinson had a bad start losing to two players rated in the 1400s who he would normally have expected a better result than two losses. However, things fell in place with win resulting from a brutal counter-attack against Stuart Holt in the third round, and then defending well enough against Tyson Walker to gain a draw in the fourth round. A win in the sixth round lifted Andrew's contribution to 2.5 points for the day which was only just sub-par.

Joshua Morris won the board prize for Board Five with a scintillating performance over the seven rounds, obtaining five wins, a draw and a loss. Probably Joshua's greatest triumph was persevering in a difficult endgame with queens on the board against a very strong opponent in Michael D'Arcy representing the Bullwinkle club.

Tony Morris started well winning a full point in each of the first three round, including a forfeit in his Round Two game against UQ. For this game his opponent was to be Shane Mather who was filling in on Board Six for UQ, but Shane opted to play a friendly and forfeit the match game due to his conflict of interest as team captain of The Gap. After his early success, Tony lost his way somewhat, gaining just a draw and three losses in the final four rounds, sometimes coming out worse after being in a winning position.
