A good attendance tonight resulted in many games played to progress the tournament towards its conclusion.
Joe Curtain completed three sets of matches with mixed results. He claimed a draw from the in-form Shane Mather, and won twice against Brian Willcock who is an unpredictable opponent.
Andrew Robinson checked Joe’s king in their second game, but in doing so left his queen en pris. Joe moved his king rather than capturing Andrew’s queen with his own queen. Then Andrew captured a knight instead of taking Joe’s queen which was now en pris (the third consecutive move that was a gross blunder). Joe ended the farce by resigning.
Two even game between Andrew Robinson and Nathan Key resulted in a win each with white.
In the first game, Andrew carelessly game away a central pawn early on, failing to see a fianchettoed bishop, after which the game was a slow grind to the end with few chances for genuine couterplay.
In the second game, Andrew had to finally sacrifice a pawn, but this allowed momentum to mount an overwhelming attack on Nathan’s uncastled king.
Tony Morris borrowed Brian’s Willcock’s signature variation, with an unintended queen sacrifice gifting the first game.
In a game that has decided second place, Shane surprised by winning both game against Joshua who missed a few of his opportunities, and the result should have been much closer.
Andrew Mather maintained his perfect record with a two win from two performance against Nick, the game viewed by many spectators.
