Of the games tonight, the most intense were undoubtedly those between Nick and James.

The first game was won by Nick on time, although he also had a superior position on the board at the time James’ flag fell.

In the second game, the position was even, then Nick left a rook hanging. James didn’t see it, a huge relief to Nick.

As the spectators circled the board, James succumbed to the pressure and threw away a rook of his own, to a knight fork (he could have saved the exchange but didn’t) and it all went downhill from there.
