There were 11 fixtures played on a busy night tournament-wise.

Nine of the 11 fixtures were decided 2-0. Of the other two fixtures, Tony won the first and Shane the second to share the spoils in what could be anticipated to be a close contest.

Right at the end of the night, Brian proved to be the wildcard, nearly winning the first game against Joshua, then achieving a crushing checkmate in the corner in Game Two.

During the first game, Brian made an illegal move for which a win was not claimed by Joshua (although Joshua did go on to win the game).

Therefore, I remind players of the Rapidplay rules set out in the FIDE Laws of Chess (as revised on 1 July 2014) which apply to this tournament, specifically Appendix A. 4 (2) b. which states:

An illegal move is completed once the player has pressed his clock. If the arbiter observes

this he shall declare the game lost by the player, provided the opponent has not made his next

move. If the arbiter does not intervene, the opponent is entitled to claim a win, provided the

opponent has not made his next move.

However, the game is drawn if the position is such that the opponent cannot checkmate the

player’s king by any possible series of legal moves. If the opponent does not claim and the

arbiter does not intervene, the illegal move shall stand and the game shall continue. Once the

opponent has made his next move, an illegal move cannot be corrected unless this is agreed

by the players without intervention of the arbiter.

Spectators are also reminded to refrain from commenting on tournament games while they are in progress, including illegal positions and illegal moves.

At the end of the night transfer chess was played by everyone present, except for two conscientious objectors (Brian and Ray).

Andrew Robinson teamed up with Metin Ozaslan and they were the transfer champions on the night, losing only twice (one of which was disputed) from seven games.

The transfer rules played at the club this year vary from rules previously used in one major point of difference: Checkmate is no longer allowed by the placing of a piece.

There remained the differences of opinion over application of the touch-move rule (refer to above-mentioned disputed game), but not taken too seriously in the rough and tumble of transfer chess.
