Seeds one and three by rating order clashed in a match-up likely to have a significant bearing on the final outcome of the tournament, even at this early stage.
Andrew Mather won both games, and said both were wild tactical games more suited to Joshua’s style of play.

I can't remember the rest of the game because we both only had <20 seconds each but he attacked my king and I couldn't defend under the time pressure.

I just missed Rf4 and I think I had a winning attack somewhere.
In another significant set of games, Tony Morris dominated the openings of both games against Andrew Robinson.
In the first game, playing with white Tony was so far ahead that his opponent was forced to concede the exchange to avoid checkmate.
Playing on, Tony attempted to consolidate positional advantage by avoiding exchange of pieces.
Then with time trouble looming, Andrew was able to force the recapture of the exchange, and in avoiding this recapture Tony blundered into conceding a rook and the game.
In the second game, Andrew’s opening was so terrible that it seemed terminal. However Tony was always half a move short of being able to capitalise on this advantage.
Then in counter-attack, Andrew overlooked a mate-in-two chance (Tony kindly pointed this out later).
Emerging into a bishop and pawns endgame, Andrew missed a move that allowed Tony’ bishop to capture a crucial pawn, and after this he had to scramble to obtain a draw.
Shane Mather won both games against Martin, with Martin prematurely resigning in the second game, thinking he couldn't take a piece back because of a pin when he could just take the piece with a pawn.
John won both games against James to record a significant set of victories and move up towards mid-table in the standings.
