An upset seemed on the cards on Board One when Joshua reached an endgame with a bishop and two pawns against a bishop.

Unfortunately for Joshua, the bishops were opposite colours, and he allowed Andrew’s king to position itself well.

A blunder allowed a pawn to drop with the resultant draw agreed to.

Cameron won against Metin who conceded to a gross time trouble blunder, although he was already struggling to hang on my this stage.

Andrew’s win over Joe was the result of being a couple of tempi in advance when the queen plus two rook mating combinations were established towards the end.

Nathan was the beneficiary of a gift of a rook when Brian miscalculated a combination, although Nathan did have an edge when this occurred.

Nick overlooked a piece capture that could have given him an exchange advantage, instead of which he ended a piece down. This pivotal incident did much to determine the final result in this game.

James, like the Australian cricket team in the first innings at Trent Bridge, failed to show up.
