Eight of the nine games were played over the board tonight, with the remaining game awarded to Metin when James was unable to attend due to illness.
Most games went according to expectations, however there was a big upset on Board One
Tony Howes, fresh from his Flood Cup success, succumbed in the opening round to Joshua Morris, after finding all of his pieces out of position.
According to Tony, no great blunders were made, just superb positional play from Joshua that forced Tony to concede a couple of exchanges and force resignation.
John Ryland provided an upset result of his own, although perhaps less so considering his improved play over recent months.
Against Ray, John was able to reach an even position where he was potentially on the cusp of winning a pawn advantage.
At this point, John decided ‘one in the hand was worth two in the bush’ and offered a draw, which Ray accepted.
In Board Nine, Nathan Key consolidated on an impressive debut draw against Martin two weeks ago with a strong win against Joe Curtian.
After the game, Joe expressed regret that he had played the King’s Gambit, because only a few weeks ago he had sat down with Nathan and showed him through the opening.
With this in mind, Nathan had studied the King’s Gambit in the intervening period, and was able apply his learning to avoid all the traps of this aggressive opening.
The other games were won by the higher rated players, with Stefan holding on to make his game with Cameron the last on the night to finish.
