Last Friday’s chess was cancelled due to serious inclement weather - Brisbane experienced 165.2mm of rain between 11:30am and 7:30pm on 1 May 2015.
Consequently Round 6 was played tonight, with the two outstanding Round 5 games rescheduled for next Friday (May 15).
The top four boards all saw wins to white on a night that went a long way to deciding the fate of many candidates in this year’s tournament.
Andrew Mather is now unable to retain the Flood Cup after a loss to Tony Howes who won with an unstoppable passed pawn.
The win leaves Tony as the clear favourite after Marcus lost his game to Sanat.
With Cameron almost certain to forfeit next Friday’s game against Martin due to unavailability, the likelihood is that Martin will be playing off against Tony in Round Seven for the Flood Cup title.
Sanat’s win over Marcus was completed within the hour and continues his good run of form since his Round Two loss to Tony Howes.
However, Sanat will need Tony to drop at least half a point in his final match to remain in contention.
Metin won well, capitalising on his opponent’s poor positional play which opened up his kingside to a multi-piece lethal attack.
Brian had an overwhelming position, but conceded an unnoticed (by him, not his opponent) mate-in-one.
Stefan’s good fortune puts him in a good position to claim the Handicap trophy component of this tournament.
