Lightning Tournament
Marcus Porter won the tournament quite comfortably in the end, after a slow start on the second night of the tournament.
Claiming to be sleep-deprived, Marcus was unsurprised to lose his first game of the night to Cameron, but played adequately in the remaining rounds to regain the Lightning Championship he last won in 2012.
Metin Ozaslan played very well t win head-to-head games with the two top seeds Marcus (Round 7) and Andrew Mather (Round 8), but had already dropped points on the night to Joshua (Round 1), Cameron (Round 3), Andrew Robinson (Round 5), and further lost to Martin (Round 11). More consistency may have seen a closer result at the end of the night.
Shane Mather looked after the administration side of the tournament tonight, and freed of this responsibility Andrew Robinson achieved significantly improved results on Week One. However an unexpected loss to Brian in the penultimate round scuppered his chances of wresting third place from Martin Laizans who equalled his best result in this tournament (also third place in 2012).
Two players who played in the first round were unable to attend tonight: Peter Hiller and Adam Morris. Peter’s schedule was played out by reigning Lightning champion Andrew Mather who achieved 11 points but lost to Marcus which affirmed Marcus’ entitlement to be this year’s winner without qualification.
Jim Petrie surprised many with an impressive final ranking considering the difficulties he has to overcome, and scored a meritorious 8.5 points during this tournament, gaining four points tonight to add to his 4.5 points last Friday.
