Three games were played over the board tonight as the tournament draws to a close.
Marcus looked to have a won game with an overwhelming position against Andrew. However he was not able to find the combination which would have led to a forced mate or catastrophic loss of material. Instead he fell foul of an oversight which allowed his opponent to grab two pawns and exchange queens. With queens off the board, suddenly black had a won game, which was pressed through with accurate play.
Andrew Mather sealed victory in the tournament with a victory over Martin.
Peter Hiller pulled off a surprise victory against Warren, although it was not enough to deprive Warren from claiming the Maiden Trophy. With Peter’s final match he can only reach five points, half a point short shy of Warren’s total.
Brian Willcock’s opponent did not show up tonight, but this allowed Brian the pleasure of playing a couple of games with John Guest, former club president and joint winner of the Flood Cup in 1979.
