With two players away, it was still possible to play five games tonight.

The first game to finish for the night saw John notch up his first victory of the year in a rated game, with a convincing win over Jim.

James held out well through the opening and had chances to stay in the game, but a few flawed moves allowed Martin to maintain his 100% record in this tournament so far.

Brian had conceded a couple of pawns but had some chance of recovery through an all-out assault on Andrew’s kingside, with Brian having castled queenside. With a queen and two rooks to each player, a miscalculated exchange conceded a rook for white, and the game.

Joshua was well ahead of Warren in the middle game , and while conceding his large material advantage had moved to a winning rook endgame. But Warren managed to survive and win his first game of this tournament.

Peter surprised observers with strong play to push Andrew all the way to a pawn endgame with a knight each on the board. With a bit more daring Peter might have won the game, missing a chance to sacrifice his knight and achieve an unstoppable pawn.
