John Ryland 1 Sanat Kunwar 0 (on forfeit)
Warren Mayocchi 1 Brian Willcock 0
The final round of the Flood Cup saw Andrew Mather take a big step towards winning the tournament with a win over Kieran Lyons. With a win in his postponed Round 6 match-up with Russell Lyons he will clinch the title. Andrew’s game with Kieran had approached the endgame when the players noticed that their DGT had been set at 60 minute + 10 second time controls (the same as those used last week against Bullwinkle). Both players agreed to continue the game with the reduced time controls, especially as there was a clear advantage in the game by that stage.
Kieran will not be entering our next tournament (the Stuart Wilson Trophy) as she will be travelling to Tromsø, Norway in August to represent Fiji in the 2014 Chess Olympiad, and the club wishes her well in this exciting adventure.
The top four all won tonight, and if Russell does lose next Friday there will be an odd gap in the table between 4th and 5th. In fact the top four players each did not concede a point, except in games among themselves.
Tony’s game against Russell was the first of the night to finish. In fact it only lasted ten moves and was over by 8:35pm, due to a colossal blunder in the opening.
Marcus had a long game with Ray, but was considerably up towards the end with a three pawn charge leading to Ray’s resignation at 10:49pm. This win makes it likely that Marcus will win the Handicap Trophy, however Russell can catch him by winning next Friday against Andrew Mather.
Martin played well enough in the opening, but lost his black square bishop to a knight in a dragon defence. After this Andrew grabbed the initiative, but would have had trouble breaking through. However Martin’s attacking instincts got the better of him, and he tried to attack which exposed his defences, and Andrew’s queen found a way through to attack Martin’s king leading to a resignation.
Warren won a see-sawing game with Brian. Brian was a piece up (some observers noted he was even ‘two figures up’ at one point). But Brian overlooked a pin and the game drifted towards equality. A long endgame ensued with Warren’s rook and single pawn finally winning out against Brian’s bishop and several pawns, the game finishing at 10:57pm.
