Flood Cup

Round 3 results:

Warren Mayocchi 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Brian Willcock 0 Marcus Porter 1

Also a postponed Round One match was played midweek:

Russell Lyons 0 Kieran Lyons 1

Marcus played a Kingside fianchetto defence against what was basically an e4 opening.

Brian failed to maintain tension in the centre and control in the opening, and castled queenside where Marcus had been already considering a thematic advance.

Brian quickly fell prey to this attack with its threats of mate and extensive loss of material.

Warren played an early f4 against the Sicilian and had to advanced knight by move 13 which meant his opponent had to hold on grimly until a counter-attack occurred at Move 19.

This counter-attack produced a pawn advantage to white.

But after the queens were exchanged at move 22/23, a game developed towards a draw as white’s strong bishop (against a knight) compensated for the pawn disadvantage.

Black decided to go for broke and pushed the passed pawn up to e3 at moves 34 and 35, and while holding this out white conceded another pawn which proved the crucial difference after the remaining pieces were swapped.

The game concluded at 10:40pm.
