Lightning Tournament

The first major tournament kicked off tonight with the annual Lightning tournament which has been played over two nights since 2008.

Defending champion Andrew Mather strode through each round only meeting his match in Round 8 against Brian. Brian was in a seemingly impossible position on the board and had two seconds left on his clock when Andrew delivered what seemed the knock-out punch, only to fall foul to an illegal move which Brian claimed when Andrew had inadvertently exposed his king to check.

Brian’s upset win allowed Marcus and George to remain in contention with the reverse fixtures to be played next Friday.

Marcus only dropped points to Andrew Mather and Martin Laizans, while George only conceded against the two teenage champions.

George had a close win on time against Andrew Robinson where both flags had fallen and it was declared a draw on the night.

However a check of the FIDE Laws of Chess 2009 and a number of interpretations (including http://www.chesscafe.com/text/geurt160.pdf - page 3, question 4) made it clear that this should be a win to George as there was ‘adequate supervision’ of the game – an incontestable fact when the arbiter was also a player!

Other players not mentioned above also played well on the night and had some close contests in games won by their opponents.

Russell Lyons will not be able to play next Friday, so his games for tonight’s matches count, and next Friday each player receives a bye and a free point for the forfeit.
