Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

Martin Laizans 1 Greg Colwell 0 (Round 7)

Andrew Robinson 1 Ray Adams 0 (Round 7)

Jim Petrie 0 Tony Howes 1 (Round 9)

The tournament was decided tonight in an anti-climactic game after recent epic battles. Ray played below his usual standard and conceding the decisive game after just 20 moves. Andrew had gained a pawn advantage after Ray played out of order at move 12. Then a further blunder by Ray at move 19 allowed Andrew to seemingly win a bishop. Before Andrew made his 20th move, Ray pencilled it in on his scoresheet followed by the word ‘resigns’. Immediately after, Andrew demonstrated a series of moves that would have allowed Ray to remain a pawn down rather than a piece. It certainly was not Ray’s night. However this win allowed Andrew to win the Stuart Wilson Trophy outright for the first time since 2002 (once shared with Kieran Lyons in 2010).

Martin Laizans continued with the good form that has won him the Maiden Trophy section of this tournament with a convincing win over Greg. In the end he only won by virtue of a single pawn advantage, however this was a very strong pawn.

Tony won against Jim, to maintain a chance of achieving third position in the final rankings.
