Round 4 results:

Brian Willcock 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Andrew Mather 1 Jim Petrie 0 (played 31 May)

Russell Lyons 0 Martin Laizans 1

Ray Adams ½ Tony Howes ½

George Flitcroft-Smith 0 Greg Colwell 1

Five games were played tonight. The first game of the night to finish was John’s victory over Ryan which occurred after Ryan had to forfeit his queen to avoid a backrow mate. Next to finish was Martin’s win over Russell – Russell offered a draw near the end which was met with uproarious laughter from his opponent.

Brian was in a very generous mood and had inexplicably coughed up a piece for no recompense at move 7. After this Brian still had some sharp attacking possibilities down the kingside, but after castling when about to lose a second piece these chances came to nought.

Ray and Tony ground out a draw, with a pawn hive in the middle rows with a bishop each behind it. Ray offered the draw, despite having a minor advantage, albeit one unlikely to be enough to push through for a win.

George and Greg’s game lasted 78 moves, although the last 20 or so were mainly to see if Greg could achieve a win within the time control. George seemed to have most of the changes in the middle game, but fate was on Greg’s side and he saw a clever combination of checks that George had overlooked which ultimately provided him with a winning advantage. The final stage of the game was fought out with two rooks each, but Greg having three connected kingside pawns to nil, and these provided him with the win.
