Round 3 results:

Greg Colwell 0 Ray Adams 1

Martin Laizans 0 Andrew Mather 1

Jim Petrie ½ Brian Willcock ½

Andrew Robinson 1 John Ryland 0

Tony Howes 1 George Flitcroft-Smith 0 (from Round 5)

Tonight got off to a late start as the keys were misplaced, but fortunately located before the end of the evening.

Ray had the exchange and several pawns off and ended with a comfortable victory against Greg who says he is continuing to struggle to find form after a six month break from chess.

Martin miscalculated and lost to Andrew Mather after miscalculating an exchange of pieces. While their game was the first of the night to finish – around 9:00pm – this could be attributed to Martin’s quicker acceptance of the inevitable (sometimes too quick!) than other players at the club.

Brian lost a queen for a bishop, then somehow regained another piece, and Jim with his queen sidelined and out of the action forced a draw by repetition. Brian added superfluously that it was “a wild game”.

John also managed to get his queen trapped by Move 9 after failing to retreat it from a very forward position, and had to concede it for a bishop. After this things went from bad to worse for John until Checkmate at Move 29.

A battle of the chess heavyweights saw Tony push through with a decisive pawn advantage in a rook endgame to overcome George in the last game to finish for the night. Despite the late start, and both players going well under five minutes, the game was still finished just after 10:30pm.
