St David’s Day Tournament

The lead-up to the tournament

Due to perhaps a surfeit of lightning paced tournaments at this time of the year, there was once again a meagre attendance at the tournament.

Brian suggested remodelling the tournament next year, either at a different time of the year, or perhaps running it as a Fischer Random event.

The tournament

Handicaps were allocated based on performance at the recent lightning tournament. Throughout the tournament there were a lot of 1-1 results which counted in favour of the players with a handicap advantage.

Brian’s two wins over Martin and Andrew were enough to see him over the line and claim his first title in this tournament.

The prize ceremony

Reflecting the downward spiral of the tournament, the leek was presented in a can, rather than the fresh article.

Teams section

The Welsh came up trumps thanks to a couple of upset wins from the master himself, and a generous handicap system.

Quote of the night

Just disbelief that our local ABC radio today listed Tom Jones and Doctor Who as the two greatest things to come out of Wales.
