Allegro Tournament

Results:

Marcus Porter 1 Jim Petrie 1

Martin Laizans 1 Greg Colwell 1

Marcus Porter 1½ Andrew Robinson ½

Martin Laizans 2 John Ryland 0

Marcus had a piece up early in both games against Jim. He won the first game easily enough, but overlooked a checkmate in the second game to even the score on the night.

Martin and Greg’s games were similarly decided by early blunders that cost a piece, with Martin winning the first despite Greg’s desperate defence, and Greg winning on a resignation in the second (but not as early as Martin has resigned some games in the past!).

With white Andrew lost a pawn in the middle game, then blundered another as the endgame approached. He did manage to create opposite coloured bishops however which led to Marcus agreeing to a draw. The second game was decided on a massive oversight which allowed Marcus to force a win after Andrew had castled queenside.

John had played practice matches with Andrew and Ray while waiting, but still conceded both games, the second being closer than the first. Martin was pleased to finally break his run of 1-1 results.
