Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round 8 results:

Greg Colwell v Brian Willcock – postponed

James Hiller 0 Martin Laizans 1

Jim Petrie ½ Andrew Mather ½ (played July 13)

John Ryland 0 Tony Howes 1

Andrew Robinson – BYE

Tony Howes won the Stuart Wilson Trophy for a record fourth time.

Several players had won the tournament three times, but no one had managed four wins previously.

Tony’s win was rather unspectacular and relied on a material advantage at the end rather than a superb position.

However John had played well to bring it to this stage, continuing his good interclub form.

The other game played started quite late, after 9pm, and only due to the generosity of Martin who allowed it to go ahead.

James played solidly in the opening and held his own for the first 30 minutes.

Then tiredness crept in, and James played a couple of moves that resulted in haemorrhaging of material, and early resignation.

The match between Greg and Brian has been postponed to August 31.
