Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

Greg Colwell 1 James Hiller 0 (on forfeit) – from Round 2

Andrew Mather 0 Andrew Robinson 1 – from Round 5

Jim, Tony and Ray all showed up and played social chess. Greg joined them after his opponent failed to appear.

The game that was played was a very interesting tussle which went right down to the end, with white down to one second when he made moves 46 and 47. White dominated the opening, and such was the diabolical circumstances of black’s game that a draw was offered by black at move 12. White naturally played on, a pawn up, and black tying himself in knots trying to prevent a second pawn from falling. When down to a rook, a bishop and a knight, the position approached equality, although with asymmetric chances, such that a draw was unlikely. White possibly missed a key chance at move 34, moving Nd3, when Nb3 would have effectively blocked black’s ‘b’ pawn. Even at the end white had chances, but extreme time trouble prevented him from making the best of these, and black finally forced a win with a passed pawn.
