Flood Cup

Results:

Jim Petrie ½ Andrew Robinson ½ (from Round 8)

Ray Adams 0 Tony Howes 1 (from Round 9)

Two games were played tonight, with their results to decide the fate of the 2012 Flood Cup.

In four previous meetings between Jim and Andrew, Jim had always played white providing both players with a wealth of material to prepare. Despite this, the black pieces fell into a terrible disarray and after just 40 minutes of play Jim had the exchange won. At this juncture Andrew offered a draw which (to his surprise) was immediately accepted.

The early conclusion to the other game put the heat on Ray to achieve a win, knowing a draw would be insufficient to force a play-off. However the game was very even and draw-bound with a rook and two knights a-piece. Then at move 23 Ray lost a critical pawn due to an oversight and four moves later resigned. So at 9:30pm play was over, and Andrew had scraped over the line to win the Flood Cup for the first time since 2007.

Next Friday night will see the final game in the tournament between Greg and Marcus, the result of which will decide the Handicap Trophy.
