Report – 10 February 2012

Lightning Tournament

There was quite a bit of movement in the table between weeks one and two, but nothing changed at the top and Marcus Porter won the Lightning title convincingly, 3.5 points clear of the field at the end of the night.

Other than Marcus, the strongest performance of the night was from Martin who surged from fifth to third place.

Martin was undefeated tonight after losing his first game to Andrew, who also had a more consistent performance until the later rounds.

Shane slipped this week due to lots of unforced errors, and lost the momentum from last week when he played closer to what he would expect.

Many games were decided when players made illegal moves, mainly leaving their king in check and their opponent claiming a win (in the correct manner, not by capturing the king!). Such a situation saw John achieve his first win of the tournament against Brian Willcock.

The tournament was played in good spirit with no disputes, and the players are congratulated on this.

The Laws of Chess were only referred to once, and not the subject of bitter dispute that often mar the shortest form of the game .

Quote of the night

“If I keep improving half a point each week of the Lightning Tournament, I might win it by the year 2020”. – Greg Colwell
