Jack Badenhorst was included in the tournament as a late replacement for Jon Wilson who had not played any of his games.

Jack has not played in a tournament at the club since 2000, but has played internet chess as well as coaching juniors. He was certainly a challenging opponent over the board and was even until conceding a pawn at the start of the endgame. The game was decided when Jack overlook the option of capturing a pawn en passant, although this possibly expedited the end of the game, which was the last to finish on the night with both players having less than 15 minutes left.

John Ryland pulled off the upset of the night winning inside 40 minutes against Jim. When reviewing the game it was discovered that Jim overlooked an option that could have rescued a trapped bishop. Three moves later Jim left a knight en prise and swiftly resigned. This marks John’s first win against a 1000+ rated opponent.

Greg won against John in a game where John had much of the attack, with Greg resolutely defending. However time trouble was the undoing of John and he blundered to hand the game to Greg.
