Stuart Wilson Trophy

Results:

John Roper 0 Russell Lyons 1 (Round 3)

Joseph Curtain 1 Jim Petrie 0 (Round 4)

Martin Laizans 0 Andrew Robinson 1 (Round 5)

Brian Willcock 1 John Ryland 0 (Round 12)

Tony Howes 1 Russell Lyons 0 (Round 1)

With three byes in most round, many games have to organised on the night.

The games between Joe and Jim started first and finished first as well with both players using only ten minutes or so on their clock.

John had a gilt edged opportunity against Brian who by moving his pawn to e3 left his knight on g5 unprotected by his bishop. John declined Brian’s rash gambit, a fact which was only discerned after the match, and finished second best in a rook endgame.

Russell had a busy night winning first against John Roper, then losing against Tony.

The longest game of the night was played on a very congested board where both players had lost only a pawn when they reached under 20 minutes on the clock. It was a case of who smashed through first with both players having weakened kingsides. Martin’s downfall was precipitated with a blunder which left him without any chance of a defence.
