Flood Cup

Results:

Andrew Robinson ½ Gary Sands ½ (from Round 2)

James Hiller 0 Jim Petrie 1 (from Round 6)

Tony Howes 1 Russell Lyons 0 (from Round 6)

John Ryland 0 Brian Willcock 1 (from Round 7)

Four games were played tonight, as well as six other players coming along to play social chess.

Russell resigned after 14 moves with Tony having a forced mate in three. This was easily the quickest game to finish and was one of the fastest games ever played in the Flood Cup.

However it still fell short of being the shortest game this year as Russell himself achieved a checkmate in 13 moves against James.

John held on for 58 moves against Brian to play his best game of the tournament so far. With pieces swapped off Brian had a three pawn advantage at the end, which was more than enough to achieve victory.

Andrew had the better of the opening, but then Gary achieved a significant positional advantage in the middle game, which could easily have led to victory with more enterprising play.

In the endgame Andrew gained a pawn advantage, but had to cover a rook file pawn of Gary’s.

Then the game headed to a draw after Andrew pushed a pawn which allowed Gary’s knight a prime safe square, and a repetitive sequence resulted.

Jim ended up winning against James simply through attrition after James haemorrhaged material.
