Lightning Tournament
After the first night this tournament seemed to be between the top three. However Marcus won against Andrew (Round 2), and Russell beat Nathan then Tony in consecutive rounds (Rounds 2 and 3). After this Russell faltered losing his next two games against Andrew and Marcus to drop out of contention. After Tony and Nathan drew the tournament would be decided in the final two rounds by their respective games against Andrew.
The first game came to a two bishops against two knights endgame where Andrew’s two bishops were putting pressure on Nathan due to an advanced rook file pawn. Trying to extricate himself, Nathan ran out of time. A similar fate befell Tony in the last round, although he knew he had missed his chance when both players saw a moment after Tony moved that he had missed a fork with his pawn that would have netted a piece. Andrew gained a piece in the middle game, but gave it back while avoiding Tony’s rampaging queen. In the end each player had a queen, rook and pawn but Andrew’s was heavily advanced and tracking to queendom when Tony ran out of time.
