45 Minute Tournament
Results (Week 3):
Jim Petrie 0 Tony Howes 1
Andrew Robinson ½ Brian Willcock ½
Andrew Robinson 1 Tony Howes 0
The tournament is likely to end as a six player round-robin, with three players not playing a game despite only two competition nights remaining (Dec 3 & 17).
Tony won well in his first game, and Andrew managed to grab a ‘Grandmaster’s draw’ against Brian. When the draw was offered Brian had more chances to win with a well positioned bishop in the centre of the board. However he would have had to take risks to push these advantages and decided to accept the draw.
The earlier results meant that the final game of the night would most likely decide the tournament. After Andrew’s draw with Brian, Tony probably could settle for a draw with Andrew. Tony dominated the game and achieved a an exchange and pawn advantage. Probably swapping off queens could have achieved a conventional victory, but with Andrew’s king opened up Tony pressed for a crushing mate. He ended up pushing Andrew’s king up to the sixth rank then ran out of checks. Just one check by Andrew allowed a two move knight and queen mate in the corner, which went against the flow of the rest of the game.
Peter Hiller visited for the first time in many months and had a few good games with Ray.
