Round 13 result:
Five games were played tonight, the most significant of which was the draw that Andrew conceded to Ray. Without a pawn exchange during the 31 moves until the draw was agreed, the centre was too congested to allow a way through. This means that Andrew will need to beat Gary Sands on September 17 to force a play-off with Kieran.
Russell cemented his position as front-runner to win the Maiden Trophy after achieving a draw in his game with Tony. With the position (White Ka6, c4, e4, e5, h5; Black Kc7 to Kb8, a7, c5, e6, h6) at first glance it appeared that only white (Russell) had winning opportunities. Russell moved Kb5 to Ka6 to allow a claim for three-fold repetition by Tony. The arbiter attended and it was established conclusively and exhaustively that the claim was valid and the game was declared a draw. Then the possibilities were examined if white played for a win, and it was found that black indeed had a winning game with best play if white knocked off e6 due to black's escaping h pawn.
Brian
noted on the results sheet after his game finished prematurely 'Gary blundered his Q when had winning game'.
Greg
had a lost game after he overlooked a knight fork on his king and queen, Jim
caused the upset of the round by winning against Nathan who was possibly more
focussed on tomorrow afternoon's 4th Grade rugby Grand Final at Ballymore where
he is playing for GPS against University. Stuart Wilson Trophy 2010: Current standings All players to play 13 games No. NAME POINTS PLAYED 1 12 13 2 11 12 3 8 12 4 7 11 5 7 12 6 6.5 10 7 6.5 12 8 5 10 9 4.5 9 10 2 8 11 2 10 12 1 10 13 1 10 14 0.5 9 Stuart
