Round 5 result:
Two of the five games played tonight had a direct impact on the outcome of this tournament and both were finished within an hour.
Prior to this game Andrew had beaten Tony once only in twelve encounters (W1 D7 L4). As often happens Tony played the Budapest Gambit, and then appeared to have a strong position. However, a blunder at move 12 resulted in Tony's instant resignation due to the loss of a piece.
Against Kieran, Ray botched his opening in a game that only lasted 15 moves. Post-match Ray determined to study his MCO Volume 11 to see where he went wrong, and can go right the next time.
Brian conceded the exchange, and then a minor piece due to a blunder. After this he was just not able to position himself for a draw on repetition and with queens about to be exchanged had to concede. This win keeps Nathan in the running for a third place finish.
Mitchell again played well for most of the game before conceding material near the end of the game with concentration lapses. Russell advised Mitchell after the game not to be so eager to accept exchanges of material.
Last game to finish resulted in a good victory for Joe, after the complications of the middle game had been sorted out.
