Interclub v Samford Valley Chess Club

Five players showed up for The Gap to take on Samford on a very wet night. Samford managed a win for the first time in the history of this fixture.

Mitchell escaped with a lucky draw in the first game to finish when his opponent stumbled into a stalemate when in an overwhelming position.

The next games to finish saw Joe and Jon both lose to more experienced opponents.

Andrew achieved The Gap’s only victory in an interesting game. After move 15 all of Andrew’s black pieces and pawns were on the ranks 7 and 8, with only two sets of pawns so far off the board. A strong counter-attack led to a quicker than expected victory.

The fate of the tie came down to the final game in which Ray felt relieved to escape with a draw in a minor piece endgame where he was down a pawn.

Results (Gap player in bold):

Rob Joyce 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Ray Adams ½ Bob Beeley ½

Zoltan Vasahelki 1 Joe Langford 0

Mitchell Langford ½ Robert Ryan ½

Ray Wilson 1 Jon Wilson 0
