All fourteen players were in attendance tonight so seven games were played. James’ friend Anna also graced the playing arena.
Mitchell scored a win in a topsy-turvy game with James in which pieces were given away several times. The endgame saw both players with several pawns and queens on the board with Mitchell the exchange up. But he missed a knight fork when his rook greedily grabbed a pawn. James was unable to capitalise on his advantage even with queens exchanged as his knight failed to compensate for an overlooked passed pawn that steamed to victory on the eighth rank. Greg also won against Jon meaning all players are now off the mark.
Ray had a positional advantage early on that he was unable to press. Then he lost the game when it seemed headed for a draw in time pressure when he gave away his queen with a gross blunder. This was the final game of the night to finish.
Brian tried a reckless knight sacrifice on h2 for which he gained a pawn created terrific attacking possibilities for white. Then Brian overlooked a mate in two. Later he said he thought he was compelled to sacrifice the knight as it was trapped, but later analysis showed this was not so. This was the first game to finish.
Kieran played well to reach a position of being a knight down in a rook endgame, but with more than enough compensation through three extra advanced pawns. When Jim’s knight became trapped the game was sealed.
