The two top seeds battled tonight in a game which saw Kieran win out with a rook and two pawns against a rook and one pawn in a tight finish where both players were under 30 seconds.
With the position (W Ke1 Rf2 h2; B Ke3 Rh6 f4 g4) the final moves were 47 Ke1 g4; 48 Re2! Kf4; 49 Rf2+ Kd4; 50 Rg2 Kd4; 51 Kd2+ Kc3; 52 Rg2 Rh4; 53 Rg3+ Rd4; 54 Rg2 e3; 55 Ra2 Ke4; 56 Re2 Kf3; 57 K1 g3; 58 Rg2 gxh2 white resigns 0-1.
Russell did Kieran a favour by holding Andrew to a draw in a game where Andrew ended a pawn up but couldn’t press home his small advantage.
Brian provided the upset of the round by ending Ray’s run of seven straight wins in this tournament. As usually Brian used his unconventional style of play to unsettle the more orthodox Ray.

Round-Robin Tournaments at The Gap
Tonight the question was asked as to the longest round-robin rated tournament at The Gap.
The are several candidates, however the longest was the Round-Robin section of the Flood Cup way back in 1983. The tournament lasted the whole year, but the format was not judged a success as the Flood Cup reverted to a seven round Swiss the following year.
