Stuart Wilson Trophy

Round 8 result:

Russell Lyons 0 Ray Adams 1

Round 11 result:

Brian Willcock 0 Andrew Robinson 1

Play-off:

Kieran Lyons 0 Cameron De Vere 1

On the hottest Friday night since Winter when the jackets finally came off, Cameron showed that he was ready to join the heavyweights of The Gap Chess Club by winning his first tournament via a play-off victory against Kieran. The games itself was rather odd, in that Kieran was in massive time trouble by move 10 with only 56 seconds left on her clock. However a blunder at move 8 had effectively cost her a piece and this precipitated further reckless action to try to retrieve the situation. In the end Cameron was about three pieces up and about to queen a pawn and/or checkmate when the final surrender occurred.

The result itself was a repeat of two past SW Trophy tournaments – 1999 when Brian Thomas beat Andrew Robinson, then 2005 when Phillip Kirkman won, also against Andrew. In both cases the players ended up dropping only one point during the tournament, Andrew drew two games and the other player lost to him. But in the play-off the result was reversed, as was the case between Kieran and Cameron (Kieran beat Cameron in the tournament proper but drew with Gary and Tony.

Russell pushed a pawn that he should not have at move 3 which led to all sorts of problems for his kingside. Ray was able to play within himself to achieve a straightforward victory and force the Maiden Trophy into a play-off next Friday, with Gary to play Russell.

The other game of the night saw Brian miscalculate an exchange when he was in a highly advantageous position to lose a bishop and the game. Without this good fortune, Andrew would otherwise have been in desperate straits trying to salvage a draw.
