Two perfect records were jettisoned on the same night with a win to Greg and a loss to Cameron.

The first game of the night to finish revealed an embarrassing position for Nathan with Russell’s knight forking king and queen. Leading up to this point Nathan’s position was already precarious, being a piece down, and the pressure obviously contributed to the final gross blunder (which arose mirth in those of neighbouring boards).

Brian’s loss to Gary is best explained by Brian in himself in the following record of interview:

“I over extended myself in the beginning.

Gary was on top in the middle and picked up material.

I tried to hit back and my valiant lone queen picked up two rooks.

Then I was doing quite well. I saw a mate, by luck, and avoided that.

Then I overlooked another possibility of mate by capturing with the wrong piece.

If I’d played another move I almost certainly would have won.

It was a highly amusing game that ended in a most appropriate way.”

Greg managed to reach a position where he was a queen and two rooks versus a queen and a rook, and a simple exchanging down meant that he had a straightforward victory, and well deserved in light of his recent near-miss performances.

The game that could decide the tournament reached an endgame in which Cameron had a rook against a strong bishop and knight combination with a single pawn advantage. However Cameron was in severe time trouble, lost a few pawns, and then his chances of an unlikely salvage through a passed pawn backed by rook and king were thwarted when his flag fell.

Kieran also won her midweek catch-up game against Russell to move to a position of slight favouritism over Cameron to win the tournament.

Wins to Russell and Gary mean both still have a chance of winning the Maiden Trophy.

Quote of the night

In a reprise of the 1969 Football War between El Salvador and Honduras, Ray and Cameron stunned onlookers with a difference of opinion regarding AFL disciplinary proceedings:

“Essendon are thugs” – Cameron

“It was hard to tell what happened from the replay” – Ray

“If I was a mother I wouldn’t want my child playing AFL after seeing that” – Cameron

“He didn’t do anything wrong” – Ray

“He should have been given one year” – Cameron

“He shouldn’t be allowed to wear his favourite frock for a week” – Nathan (who doesn’t think AFL is really football anyway)

Encouraging words at the start:

“You might even have a chance of beating Tony now” – Cameron to Greg

“You might get a draw. On three-fold repetition” – Cameron to Andrew on his chances of beating the BYE tonight

Russell on his mid-week loss to Kieran:

“I’ve got to pick up my game against her”
