Ray won the Flood Cup for the first time as a result of Kieran settling for a draw in her game with Andrew tonight. Andrew played an unexpected defence against Kieran, the third move of which was invented on the spot (and may never be seen again). Kieran spent quite a lot a time analysing the intricacies of this novel position, particularly after pursuing an open game by smashing through the centre. For a while it appeared Andrew’s position would collapse under the pressure, but after spending over 30 minutes of two moves, Kieran gave up looking for the breakthrough and unwisely swapped her black squared bishop for a knight. From here Andrew had far more play and possibly could have pushed for the win, but forced Kieran to choose between a less favourable position or agreeing to a draw on repetition. The latter was reluctantly chosen (with a sigh!) at move 19.
The other game saw chances for both sides until Mark got lost in the endgame complexities and ended up conceding a game that might have been drawn. This result handed Gary the Handicap Trophy by the barest of margins.
